Should Christians be for or against culture?

That’s a great question, but the first thing you need to do in any conversation is define your terms.

So, what is culture? Culture is simply what people make of the world; it’s everything from barbecue to art museums to songs to movies and everything else in between those mediums. We can’t not be involved in culture; Jesus was involved in culture.

The question is, “What are we against?” We’re against the world’s system as it’s embedded in culture, those things that lead us away from life with God and toward a life consumed with self. We’re against the world, but we’re actually called to create culture and make something in the world for the glory of God. As Christians, we are in culture; it’s impossible not to be. However, we’re against those expressions of the world that get embedded in culture, and that will require different gestures and different postures.
