Student Blog Written By: Landen Bingham, Fellows
Throughout the course of this year, my view of the world completely changed.
I ceased holding a view of God that I had held my whole life, which was very basic and close-minded, and I began to explore the vast collection of theological works that formed the Church for so long.
As this process went on, I encountered just how small I saw God to be, viewing him as a kind of demigod who judged mankind. But the Fellows’ experience put me in an environment where I began to question these basic ideas.
Being surrounded by great teachers and fellow students who were on a journey to learn as well, I began to understand what love really was according to the Christian worldview: the fundamental foundation for all reality, as God is love. This changed the way I saw Christian thought. And the experiences at Fellows, such as service team meetings and life together games, gave me an opportunity to live in this love and see it in others as the year progressed.
This community-based experience also taught me to love others in a way I hadn’t before. For example, I honestly came into the year subtly judging some people because they had personalities and interests that I wasn’t used to, but as the year went on, I was put in situations with these people in which I was able to see the good traits they possessed, which I would never have thought of. I found myself being charmed by their sense of humor and their personal strengths that I lacked.
Impact blessed me with these opportunities that I genuinely have never had, and I am very thankful for them.
Everyone should force themselves out of their comfort zones in the way Impact did for me. Overall, this year at Impact taught me to learn who God really is according to Christian teaching and gave me chances to live out the love that was just an idea before.
