Teamwork Makes the Dream Work – Emma Goodson

Student Blog Written By: Emma Goodson, Fellows

All my life, I thought I was meant to work alone.

My introversion, small social battery, and quietness led me to a habitual lifestyle of independence. Because I focus a lot more easily in an isolated environment, I often found myself seeking ways to work on my own, even in circumstances like group projects. I just wasn’t built to be in a team. I was better off managing tasks alone.

It took two long flights, with one layover, and two weeks in another country to shift this perspective.

Going to South Africa was one of the best experiences I’ve had throughout these past nine months. My amazing team, with my three incredible leaders, shaped my view on what it looks like to work with others for the glory of God.

My team consisted of individuals with many differences, and I was somewhat hesitant about working with them during this trip. But what I assumed would turn into a trip with me drained and discouraged at the end of each day ended up being a gift of God that drew me closer to him and his people.

Despite the wide variety of personalities and temperaments, my international team quickly grew in our chemistry. As we served with Living Hope over the span of two weeks, we learned that instead of clashing, our dynamics were actually complementary. This led to a strong sense of teamwork as we grew to focus not on ourselves, but on serving the people of South Africa for their highest good and for God’s glory.

I exponentially grew in my love for people during this trip, not just as I interacted with the locals, but especially as I served with my team. The Lord used this love to shift my perspective and show me how it can truly be a blessing to work alongside fellow brothers and sisters. They revealed to me how working together with the same goal can be so life-giving. The Lord used my team to show me that I can thrive and delight in working with others. They were truly a gift of God’s grace.
