One way to define leadership is the ability to guide others to a common goal. It is the action of leading those around you. In its usual sense, leadership refers to something inborn or positional, but in another, no less important sense, leadership is influence.
With this in mind, how can we be leaders who reflect Christ?
In today’s ever-changing world, living a life for Christ will be counter cultural. This means that our way of leading will be distinct, but it will reflect Christ’s work in each of our lives.
We are called to be people who focus on our character, leading with honesty, humility, and discipline. When it comes to leadership, the difficulty is not understanding the concepts but living them out. This is exactly what we are doing during our year at Fellows. We are not only learning but growing in our characters and practicing the disciplines that will help us to live out our lives as Christian leaders.
Coming into Impact 360 I knew that most of the other Fellows had been leaders in their communities, but it has been really encouraging to see how everyone is still eager to learn and grow. Living in such close community has shown me that there are always ways I can help build up the students around me. It has also been beautiful to see how each person has unique giftings that they bring to our class.
This is the first time many of us have lived away from home and has forced us to adapt to life in a community of people who often have very different personalities. We have been learning how to truly love others by putting their needs above our own.
Through our service teams we have been able to see how our teammates work together as a group and through that get to learn about each other’s strengths, weaknesses, and the ways they can lead in our groups. Our teams have a weekly debrief time where we can offer both critical and encouraging feedback for the team. This creates an environment where we are all growing as young leaders while building our fellow classmates up.
One of the ways our class gets to serve the community around us is through our service team off campus opportunities. Each team gets to go to a local organization, such as Young Life, after-school programs, etc. and they get to work, serve, and lead within that program. Through this experience we all have the chance to lead in the community outside of Impact 360.
When it comes to leadership, I have already seen so much growth in both the class, and myself. The skills we are learning here will equip us to be ambassadors for Christ for the rest of our lives and I personally cannot wait to see all the beautiful things Class Twenty will do!
