How Spiritual Rhythms Changed Me – Elizabeth Green

During our spiritual rhythm’s week, I grew exponentially not only in my faith, but in how I practice my faith as well. We went through twelve spiritual disciplines that we can implement in our everyday lives. These were: meditation, fasting, study, solitude, simplicity, prayer, submission, service, confession, worship, guidance, and celebration. One main principle that stuck with me was fasting. We learned that fasting means abstaining from physical nourishment for the purpose of spiritual nourishment. It does not change God’s hearing of our prayers, but rather it changes our prayer, how earnestly we talk to God, and it teaches you how to be a kind person even when you are not getting your way or experiencing immediate gratification. Fasting helps with exercising the ability to have the self-control to say “no” to things that might be tempting but are not necessary or good for us.

Another discipline I will be adding to my life more frequently is celebration. Celebration is the act of intentionally enjoying God’s good gifts.

We get to celebrate life and each other because He has given us the greatest gift of all.

Gratitude is always at the core of celebration because it keeps our hearts and minds on the goodness of God and all of the wonderful things we have been given. A classroom session from this past month that I found quite interesting and that grew me a lot was “Arguments for God’s existence,” taught by Ed Bort. I had never been given good, solid proof and ways that I could argue for the existence of God before, but Ed Bort did a fantastic job of explaining multiple arguments, how to use them, and going into detail about why it matters to know these things. Overall, my time at Impact 360 so far has been very growth-oriented, filled with much learning, as well as lots of new friendships.
