Growing into Leadership

You’ve likely heard it said that “leadership is not a destination.” It’s true that leadership, as a trait, is largely aspirational in that it is something one is always chasing. Once one believes they have arrived as a fully formed leader is also the moment, they begin to lose their edge.

Leadership is a characteristic, not a trait, therefore it must always be cultivated.

Every leader’s journey encompasses growth, failures, challenges, and opportunities. The secret is to never waste opportunities. We learn as much, or more, from what fails than from the successes we encounter in our leadership. Genuine humility will always serve a developing leader well.

For young Christian professionals there is another important consideration. The leadership path cannot just be about career advancement; it is about living out your calling with integrity and purpose to the glory of God. At Impact 360, we seek to develop young Christian leaders.

As you navigate this path here are five tips to consider.

  1. Start with Purpose: True leadership begins with clarity of purpose. Impact 360’s founding purpose is to cultivate followers of Jesus who fear God and give Him glory. We believe every Christian’s work serves as a testimony to the glory of God. Leading others will provide one great opportunity to influence others by allowing them to see God working in your life. As you step into leadership roles be intentional to anchor your decisions and motivations in God’s Truth. In alignment with Jesus’ Great Commandment (Matthew 22:36-40) ask yourself “How does this choice honor God?” and “How does it serve others?” When your leadership flows from a Christ-centered purpose, it becomes much more than a title, it becomes your ministry.
  2. Embrace a Growth Mindset: One of Impact 360’s team attributes we pursue is for our team members to seek “Innovative Ownership and a Growth Mindset.” This means taking initiative, accepting responsibility, and seeking continuous improvement. Leadership will have moments stretching you beyond your comfort zone. Instead of fearing challenges, view these as opportunities to gain experience, grow, and improve. A growing leader must continue to read widely, seek mentors, and invite feedback. The best leaders see themselves (and those they lead) as lifelong learners.
  3. Lead with Courageous Integrity: Other team attributes Impact 360 values are “Joyful Grit and Courageous Integrity”. This means one seeks to persevere through obstacles with hope while demonstrating commitment to Jesus’ teachings. In a world that often compromises for convenience, we seek to stand firm in our convictions as any leader should. Integrity builds trust, and trust becomes the foundation for influence. When faced with tough decisions, growing leaders must choose what is right over what is easy.
  4. Serve Before You Lead: A Christ-like perspective on leadership quickly reveals it is not about the pursuit of power; it’s about humble service to others. Another attribute Impact 360 team members are challenged to pursue is “Clear Collaboration and Servant-Heartedness.” This reminds us to enlist the gifts of others and communicate with clarity and kindness. As a growing leader, look for ways to elevate those around you. The best leaders understand true success is found in helping others succeed, not in seeking all the credit for yourself.
  5. Stay Rooted in Community: This is an important and often overlooked characteristic of a growing leader. No leader will ultimately flourish in isolation. You must actively seek to surround yourself with people who challenge and encourage you spiritually and professionally. Accountability and fellowship will keep you grounded as you navigate the complexities of leadership.

Leadership, from a Christian perspective, can’t be viewed as simply having authority and control over others and projects; leadership is a sacred trust which God has extended to you.

As you pursue your professional goals, remember that your ultimate calling is to glorify God and make disciples. By living out values and attributes we seek at Impact 360’s; purpose, growth, integrity, service, and community; you can lead with confidence and grow a Christ-like influence. The path will sometimes be challenging, but with faith and perseverance, you will impact lives for Kingdom influence.
