A Sweet Afternoon in Utah – Delaney Dickinson

During our trip to Utah, we spent a day practicing spreading the Gospel and going door to door in the neighborhood surrounding BYU’s campus. It was an incredible opportunity to get out of our comfort zones and do something I have never done before. Ty Peterson and I were paired up for the day. We got sent off to start knocking on doors. The first door we tried, nobody answered. Then, at the next door we tried, an elderly woman answered right away. She welcomed us right in. She apologized for the mess. She had just moved and also had a fall. She hurt her wrist and head, so she hasn’t been able to do much around the house.

She welcomed us on her couch, and we told her that we were evangelical Christians learning about different worldviews and religions, specifically the LDS church. She shared her testimony of how she came to the LDS faith and parts of her life story. She also opened up and shared how she had been hurt in the past by evangelical Christians, after hearing that Ty and I had the mutual understanding that we didn’t really want to try and debate her on her faith but simply show the true love of Jesus to her. We ended up spending the rest of our time that day door-to-door with her. We also go to help her with a project that she needed to get down on her porch but hadn’t been able to do because of her fall.

She also took us on a walk to see the Provo Temple. She was really excited to show us how they had changed the gardens to the fall flowers. We spent the rest of the time in sweet conversation and got to share a little about our stories too. I learned a lot through that experience with her. Even though we didn’t get to dive into a discussion about Christianity vs. the LDS faith, I believe we showed her the Gospel in a way of love and service to her that truly impacted her view of the Christian faith.

God taught me how I can share the Gospel in different ways, and every experience is going to be different, but that shouldn’t stop me from spreading the truth.
